Spell
Time:
Trigger
Trigger:
When you would take damage
Target:
You
Limit:
Once per instance of damage
Duration:
One hit or other instance of damage
With a surge of magical energy, you conjure a temporary shield to take damage in your place, briefly become insubstantial, or even rewind time when you are hurt so you emerge unharmed. Regardless of the method, the result is the same.
When you would take damage, you may cast Mana Barrier to become immune to that damage and reduce it by 100.
(Why does Mana Barrier also reduce damage? Because some abilities can downgrade or ignore immunity, and it still helps even against them.)
This spell can only be cast if your spellburn die is above a certain size at the time of casting.
(If Mana Barrier is stopped by Counterspell or a readied Dispel, you cannot cast it again against the same hit, failed save, or other instance of damage).
Mana Barrier only stops one instance of damage.
If Mana Barrier reduces the damage of a hit to 0, that hit becomes a miss.
(You do not suffer any ongoing damage from that hit, or other on hit effects from it.)
(Reducing the damage from failing a save to 0 does not protect you from any other effects of failing that save.)
Suggested Backfire: Mana Barrier is fried.
The protective barrier form of Mana Barrier is the most traditional version of this spell.
The Void spell, which accomplishes the same by momentarily shifting you out of physical existence to another overlapping plane is rarer, but popular among mages who specialize in space magic.
The Rewind spell is a matter of some debate. Some theorize it is simply an illusion paired with a protective spell, while others say it was once used but the method has been lost to all but a select few. The few purported practitioners of it are not forthcoming with their secrets, except to their protegees.
